(meteorobs) Gem obs. LANMA 13-14 Dec 2001

Hi all,

Below is a table with my Geminid observations of last night, 13-14 December.
Given that I had to work today I couldn't afford a full night, but
restricted myself to the period between 0h and 2h local time (23:00-1:00
UTC, 1.75h effective observing time). We are in the midst of a cold spell
here in Holland, so we had a clear night with a mild frost (-2 C). I reached
a Lm of +6.4 which is very good for Voorschoten. As usual, the Geminids put
up a fine show. I love these meteors: they are so elegant, with their 35
km/s and steady brightness. I think this is perhaps the most attractive
annual stream there is. Good to note that so shortly after the spectacular
Leonids, a "lesser" show still is enjoyable too. And yes: a few Geminids
actually had 'mysteriously' turned into "Leonids" when I listened the
tapes...oops! Anyway, rates were high enough not to get bored - on the
contrary! Which is no surprise observing less than 5 hours from the maximum.
It brought back memories to that memorable 1996 Geminid campaign: 1257
meteors in 13h in one single night, with up to 144 Geminids per hour near
the peak (observing under very good conditions that year). It was less cold
though this year (but I was observing closer to the tempering sea now). With
a total of 159 meteors of which 118 were Geminids: not a bad night! Glad I
decided to do some observing after all...
