I've read some years ago that some asteroids may be just big balls of
rocks (big and small) covered with tens of meters of dust. Some of these
bodies can coalesce to form dobble asteroids, or desintegrate themselves
totally in the case of a slightly more energetic enconter. Isn't hard to
imagine micrometeorites continuously crashing on such surfaces and
spreading out hundreds of kg of dust and rocks in the asteroid's path.
