(meteorobs) Recent Observations

North American Meteor Network
Recent Observations: January 2002

With the start of a new year, many observers were able to make some time to
observe meteors. During January, thirty-four people from across the globe
sent reports in to us providing over 87 hours of observations. Most of these
observations were held during January, but a few reports covered activity
from the busy November-December period. We also received a large quantity of
first-time reports from the observers of the Department of Physics and
Astronomy, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, including
Alex Aronson, Eli Bain, Deborah Goldader, Lauren Grassie, Nicole Li, Missy
Rubbins and Neel Shah. Other observers submitting reports this month
include:

Jure Atanackov, Slovenia
Peter Detterline, USA
Yuwei Fan, China
Eric Flescher, USA
Mark Fox, USA
Lew Gramer, USA
Cathy Hall, Canada
Tomislav Jurkic, Croatia
Javor Kac, Slovenia
Mike Linnolt, USA
Robert Lunsford, USA
Hartwig Luthen, Germany
Philippe Martin, France
Pierre Martin, Canada
Bert Matous, USA
Emil Neato, Romania
Francois Pineau, France
Sergey Shanov, Russia
Gilles Siguret, France
Enrico Stomeo, Italy
Wes Stone, USA
David Swann, USA
Arnold Tukkers, Netherlands
Michel Vandeputte, Belgium
Dan Xia, China
Jure Zakrajsek, Slovenia
Jin Zhu, China

The Quadrantids provided the most activity for the month with 315 members
recorded. But this was nothing to brag about as the sporadics actually
out-produced the Quadrantids 326 to 315 for the month! This fact was not
missed by many observers, as there were lots of comments about the activity
being pretty slow this year. Two other showers that ran neck-to-neck for
much of the month were the Coma Berenicids and Delta Cancrids. In the end
the Delta Cancrids won the race with 54 meteors recorded to only 39 Coma
Berenicids.

A full listing of all uncorrected observing summaries received during
January is listed below, followed by the shower breakdown. Our thanks go to
all of the observers who participated in meteor watches this month!
