(meteorobs) Leonid MAC Workshop

When: April 13
Where: NASA Ames Research Center

The first of two Leonid MAC meetings are being held
at NASA Ames on Saturday April 13. The meeting serves
the goal of reliving the November 2001 Leonid storms,
summarizing ongoing research, and discussing plans
for the 2002 ground and airborne campaign.
We have great speakers lined up, talking about Leonid observing
in Australia, origin of life, the first detection of a
bowshock in meteor images, unexplained spectral features,
new molecular bands, puzzling mid-IR data, HDTV images of
the storm from 41000 ft, and so on...

Confirmed speakers at the business meeting at NASA Ames Research
Center (April 13) are, amongst others:
Dr. Ray Russell (the Aerospace Corporation)
Mid-IR observations of meteors and trains.
Dr. Hans Stenbaek-Nielsen (University of Alaska at Fairbanks)
  Leonid meteor at 1000 frames/s
 Dr. James Peterson (SDL, Utah)
Video of a meteor in the mid-IR
 Dr. Peter Jenniskens (SETI Institute)
New molecular bands and unidentified lines in high resolution
  optical spectra of Leonid meteors
Ed Schilling (NASA Ames Research Center)
HDTV images of the 2001 Leonid shower from 13000 ft.
 Dr. Rick Rairden (Lockheed Martin)
Search for CN emission in Leonid meteors
 Jane Houston-Jones (AANC)
Near-real time flux measurements from Australia
Representatives from the US Air Force 418th FLTS and NASA Dryden Flight
Research Center will discuss the opportunities for airborne research.

Pre-registration is required for access onto Ames. Abstracts for
presentations are due on April 01:

When: May 02-05
Where: Tokyo, Japan

A science meeting to discuss the ongoing research on the
Leonid storms will be organized in Tokyo, Japan. This 3-day
event follows in the footsteps of a successful Leonid MAC
Workshop held in Tel-Aviv, Israel, in April 2000.
Confirmed speakers are amongst others:

Dr. Jiri Borovicka, Ondrejov Observatory, Czech Republic
Optical spectroscopy of 2001 Leonid meteors
Dr. James Peterson, Space Dynamics Laboratory, Utah
Video of a meteor in the thermal mid-IR
Dr. Noah Brosch, Tel Aviv University, Israel
Phased array radar observations from Israel
 Dr. Hajime Yano, ISAS
HDTV observations of the 2001 Leonids from Hawaii.
Dr. Takashi Maruyama, Communication Research Laboratory, Tokyo
  Ionosonde observations during the Leonids
 Dr. Shinsuke Abe, ISAS
high definition optical spectroscopy of 2001 Leonids
 Dr. Peter Jenniskens (SETI Institute)
The 2001 Leonid Multi-Instrument Aircraft Campaign - first results
 Teruaki Yoshida, Hiroshima City University
Dual frequency FM observations of the Leonid shower
Dr. Olga Popova, Inst. for Dynamics of Geospheres RAS, Moscow
  Hydrodynamic models of high-velocity meteors

The call for abstracts, and forms for preregistration, are now available
