(meteorobs) First Object into Space in Question

I read a story in a popular book on rocketry some months ago that asked if Sputnik actually was the
first object put into space. The discussion concerned whether a possible undeground nuclear test
made in 1955 actually lifted a 4" think and 4 foot diameter lid into space. It was suggested that it
may have. Recently the New Scientist magazine discussed this and concluded it did not, but that a V2
firing in the U.S.at White Sands back in 1947 may have put some pellets blown out of the nose cone
into space.
See the web page at<http://www.newscientist.com/lastword/>. Note the comparison to meteors. Anyone
care to comment on the ideas expressed there?
