(meteorobs) Lyrids & Puppids from Hawaii. (LINMI)
Given the lunar interference for this years Lyrids, I was tempted to
travel to the summit of one of the volcanos to maximize sky clarity.
But with the weather quite variable up to the day of the shower, and
the NOGAPS/AVN models providing little confidence on that nights
outcome, I just watched and waited to the last minute - and
decided to stay on Oahu. I drove up to our club's dark sky site on
the north shore and was rewarded with a very clear night. The sea
level location and moisture probably reduced my LM a few tenths
compared to the high altitude volcanos, but still had quite useful
conditions prevailing throughout the night.
I did an early session soon after dark set in, in hopes of catching
some Pi-puppids. Alas, none were seen.
After the LYR radiant rose I began a night long vigil, punctuated by
several breaks observing variable stars and the Comet Ikeya-Zhang
(at mag 4.3 now with 2.5° tail)... Overall, I was not too impressed
with the Lyrids this time around. Never saw any real bright ones, no
real strong showing. A few times there appeared a burst of activity
of a couple in a matter of minutes, but those were few and far
between. At times it was hard to keep concentrating on a blank
sky.
My calculated ZHR's seem to support the peak occuring around
the expected time of 09-11 UT. However there seemed to be
another round of activity after 12:30 UT, but that could be just
statistical anomaly due to shorter periods and low raw counts.
Overall, not a particularly impressive event this year.
