(meteorobs) eta-Lyrids

Dear observers,

this is to point your attention to the eta-Lyrids, a minor meteor shower
associated with the comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock. Marco Langbroek et al. from
the DMS studied this minor shower recently in paper that is in preparation
for WGN. From visual observations of four DMS observers they find a
maximum ZHR of about 7 near 49 deg sol. long. (May 9/10). Orbits from
the IAU photographic database reveal a radiant at alpha=288 deg,
delta=44 deg with velocity at infinity of 44 km/s.

Video data collected by the AKM video network and analysed by me further
confirm this meteor shower. In a detailed investigation of the period May
1-20, the shower starts to show up around May 7, has a clear peak at May
10/11, and by May 17 shower activity has declined to zero again. The
mean radiant obtained from the video data lies at alpha=286.5 deg and
delta=46.5 deg.

As the moon is placed favouritely, meteor observers are invited to pay
special attention to this minor shower in 2002. Visual observers
should plot all meteors to ensure proper meteor shower
identification. Video observers using the MetRec software may add a line

ELY eta-Lyrids 5/5 5/17 5/10 288 44 +1.0 0.0 10 44

to their metrec.shw file to get a direct feedback about the activity of
this shower in 2002.

Best wishes,
Sirko Molau
