(meteorobs) Eta Lyrid Meteors Seen!

Eta Lyrid Meteors from Iras-Araki-Alcock Seen!

I was out meteor observing under good clear moonless skies on Saturday
morning, May 10/11, and was impressed by the number of Eta Lyrid meteors that
were seen! You may recall from Bob Lunsford's last Meteor Activity Outlook
for May 10-16, 2002, that the Eta Lyrids are a suspected new meteor shower
caused by remnants of comet Iras-Araki-Alcock, which approached Earth back
in May 1983. The orbit of the comet lies close enough to Earth between May
4th and May 18th to produce minor activity. From 5:30 to 8:30 UT, I observed
12 ELY meteors from the radiant at 19:20 (290) +44. Half of the ELY meteors
were 4th or 5th magnitude, but a couple were 1st and -1 magnitudes. They were
of medium speed. Below is a brief summary of them and the other meteors seen.
I will send a complete report to Bob later for AMS.
