(meteorobs) population index

Hi all;

I only have time for a very short answer to the population index definition.
This same issue came up with work I was doing with Sirko Molau. In the
limit that there are a LARGE number of meteors counted in each magnitude
class then the cumulative definition (the correct one) and the simple ratio
of adjacent meteor class bins are one in the same. This can be shown
mathematically in the limit of infinite numbers of meteors counted. For the
typical numbers of meteors we count (small number statistics) this is no
longer true and various methods have been employed to estimate the
population index. The latest involves the estimate of the mean of all
meteors seen and a look up table into the population index. Perhaps Rainer
can shed additional light on the subject and the reference to that method.
Got to run now.
