(meteorobs) Perseid obs. LANMA 12-13 Aug 2002
Hi all,
We finally did get some clear skies during the Perseid maximum, although not
during the whole of the night. I observed together with Koen Miskotte and
Casper ter Kuile from our location in Biddinghuizen (the farm of the Appel
family). It was some time ago we last had observed here, good to meet this very
friendly family again. After a social chat, we were back in the meadow again to
prepare for a dark night. The first part of the night was nice, with Lm at
+6.8. We were allowed some 2 hours of clear skies, and we observed a few nice
earthgrazers and a nice number of bright ones. Later during the night, clouds
intervened and we had to stop. Late in the night we managed to get a short
period (0.5 hours) during which the sky opened again, but then were clouded out
again. We saw a bright fireball appear behind the clouds: I saw it start
through thin clouds, then disappear behind a thick cloud, and then the rest of
the sky was shortly illuminated.... This must have been at least a -6 or
something like that... When twilight already was in progress, the sky suddenly
cleared completely again. We did not log the data from that period but did see
a nice activity and a couple of bright ones again.
A quick very preliminary look at the data gives quite normal ZHR's of about 80
for the early part of our session (21-23 UTC), and perhaps a bit low ZHR's
(~50) for the short 0.5 hour session between 0:50-1:32 UTC (but then, this was
a short period only). Below a table with my data. 183 meteors in all of which
147 were Perseids. Although we didn't get a full clear night, it was enjoyable.
Maybe tonight for a second round of observing.
