(meteorobs) Observation August 13/14 - the night after the peak
Hi again!
The next three nights of the camp were cloudy or worse so we could
do no observing. In late afternoon on August 12, however, the sky showed
signs of clearing. Hopes were high for the peak night, but the weather
never improved enough. There was even some light drizzle late in the
night. Miha and I got a glimpse of the activity through a 50x50 degrees
hole in the clouds which persisted for about 15 minutes. LM was 7.2.
There was some hefty activity and I saw about 30 Perseids in those 15
minutes (I have the data on a tape somewhere, but it is proving VERY
elusive to find!). We also saw a -5m Perseid fireball through thin clouds.
Of course, the next night was clear, so that we could get a good
look at the activity after the peak and keep wondering just how strong
the peak would have been especially whith the excellent skies at Jezerski
vrh. LM this night started at 6.6 with the Moon up, but improved quickly
after the Moon set and hovered between 7.0 and 7.2 for the rest of the
night. M33 was again easily visible even early in the night at low
altitude. Later in the night I could see the Gegenschein and Zodiacal
band from Aquarius up to Taurus.
Perseid activity was good from the start. I saw several bright
earthgrazers during twilight while walking up the hill (our observing
location is some 700m from the cottage we were staying in), one of them
a -2m, 70 degrees long meteor. The Perseids were, however, quite faint.
There were numerous bright meteors, but not as many as you'd expect before
or during the peak (at least that was my impression). There were some nice
fireballs, though. A -3m yellow Per at 22:50 UT with train 5 seconds, then
a very impressive bluegreen -5m Per fireball with two bright bursts at
23:05:43 UT in Capricornus and later, at 02:02 UT a nice -4m orange with
train 10 seconds in Capricornus. Other showers were impressive, but again
nothing special. The sporadics were a bit weak in the morning considering
the excellent LM and good rates in the evening. Javor and I again had a
look at C/2002 O6 with 7x50 binos and again made some magnitude estimates.
By the way, echoing my last year's impressions, it was bitterly cold
again and of course the wind was blowing like a hurricane...
