I spoke to the observer of the October 8 fireball. She was in Rhodes at the time. Her boyfriend noticed it first, but it was moving slow enough for her to see it too.

According to them it moved slower than most meteors, but faster than a satellite. There was no color, just bright white.

The most striking remark was that "it seemed to fall straight down from the sky, like a flare." (not irridium, but ehm, lightbullets as we call them here :)

I checked heavens-above but it reported no Irridium flares, nor other satellites for the time 19:37 (though there was one at 20:24)

I'm quite convinced they didn't see a satellite, but not quite convinced they saw a meteor either. It would have been seen by more people I guess, so it might have been that what they tought it looked like: a regular flare.

But then, she has seem more than a few meteors and since she is convinced...
