(meteorobs) Additional Leonid Meteor Shower Observational Reports from Nelson County, Virginia
Over the past few days, I have managed to gather some data from some of
my students and one of my teaching Comrades, at Nelson County High
School. They did meteor counts and enjoyed what they saw very much.
This is fairly raw data, yet most agreed that they noticed the greatest
activity between 1040 and 1050 UT. Their observations and meteor counts
for the night of 18/19 November 2002 are as follows:
Observer - Laverne Castillo (Teacher/She filled in for me while I
was in Coastal NC with My Family)
Location - Tyro, Virginia (Lat. 37.82 N; Long. 079.01 W)
Observation Time - 0900 to 1100 UT
0900 - 0910 UT 9 Leonids
0910 - 0920 5 Leonids
0920 - 0930 7 Leonids
0930 - 0940 7 Leonids
0940 - 0950 9 Leonids
0950 - 1000 10 Leonids
1000 - 1010 22 Leonids
1010 - 1020 29 Leonids
1020 - 1030 55 Leonids
1030 - 1040 80 Leonids
1040 - 1050 92 Leonids
1050 - 1100 53 Leonids
Leonid Total 378
Observer - Caroline Shelnut (Earth Science Student)
Location - Afton, Virginia (Lat. 38.03 N; Long. 078.84 W)
Observation Time - 0955 to 1050 UT
0955 - 1025 UT 61 Leonids
1025 - 1035 21 Leonids
1035 - 1045 31 Leonids
1045 - 1050 26 Leonids

Observer - Douglas Clayton (Earth Science Student)
Location - Arrington, Virginia (Lat. 37.68 N; 078.90 W)
Observation Time - 0900 to 1100 UT
0900 - 0930 24 Leonids
0930 - 0940 10 Leonids
0940 - 0950 7 Leonids
0950 - 1000 11 Leonids
1000 - 1010 12 Leonids
1010 - 1020 22 Leonids
1020 - 1030 29 Leonids
1030 - 1040 75 Leonids
1040 - 1050 80 Leonids
1050 - 1100 57 Leonids
Leonid Total 327
Two other students of mine saw the following:
Leslie Bell observed between 1030 to 1100 UT and saw 160 Meteors.
Kirby White observed between 0858 to 1000 UT and saw about 300
Meteors.
Many other students made observations of this Grand Event, but
contributed very little in the way of useable data.
Nelson County is a very rural County in Central Virginia and the
