This was what I also first thought when I read
Esko's story.

The meteor storm was at 12:00 UT, as far as I know.
At that time, the radiant was about 9 deg high,
but it was daytime - the sun was also 7 deg high
in the sky. Astronomical twilight was at 16:16 UT,
but then the radiant was below the horizon.

These times are for Helsinki. From the very north
of Finland, the sun was 1.3 deg BELOW the horizon at maximum
time, and at 16 UT, at the time of astr. twilight, the radiant
was some degrees above the horizon. But with the rates already
being quite low at this time, I doubt that this would have given
a spectacular sight as described. Also it would imply that the
observation was not from the Helsinki region, as indicated by Esko.
