Here's some information that I found about meteor 
showers most relevant for southern hemisphere 
observers:

Meteor Showers Visible from Australia:

Major meteor streams (some emphasis on ones visible 
from Australia, as it's the web site of an Australian 
group):

Looking at the IMO calendar for 2003, 

 http://www.imodot net/calendar/cal03.html

the best southern hemisphere prospects for 2003 
(including reasonably favorable Moon phases) appear 
to be the:

Alpha Centaurids
Lyrids
Pi Puppids
Eta Aquarids
South Delta Aquarids
Orionids
Leonids
Alpha Monocerotids

To find minor showers with low expected rates, look 
at the IMO's working list, and check the "delta" 
column under "Radiants".  The radiants with negative 
values (or low positive ones) can be seen well from 
the southern hemisphere.
