Hi again Troy...
It is not uncommon to see 'sparks and flames' coming off a good meteor, even
at such large distances. As for the question of speed, any body solid and
large enough to survive the full length of re-entry, will still pack a fair
speed and probably give a boom or two... This is simply due to inertia. I
have seen a fire ball that radar tracked to within 8 kilometres of the
ground. The booms from that set off countless car alarms and was detected by
seismographs over a wide area! (it was estimated at about a metre in
diameter)
I hope you get to experience one of those one day. That will really make
your jaw drop!
