Re: (meteorobs) VANMC 6-7 may 2003 (late Aquarid report)

Hey Mr Kern Jones ; I really enjoyed reading your story on the Eta’s ! Once
in my life I hope to visit Australia. Perhaps it will be some where around
the ETA maximum period….??

Hi Michel
Many thanks for the compliment Michel... i'm going to run out of old stories
soon, i suspect. You have nearly heard all my stories by now (lucky for
everyone on meteorobs ... hehe ;-) ). Time to get some new
experiences/observing adventures again soon hopefully!

Its a shame there is a full moon next year for the ETA'S, otherwise it would
of been a good time to come down under with the Great spectacle of both
comets C/2002 T7 (LINEAR) and C/2001 Q4 (NEAT) both at around 0 magnitude,
and both in one human vision wide field of view!!?. Maybe you should come to
Australia for that alone!!
I'm glad you caught a couple of ETA'S at least!! I won't complain about a
quiet ETA shower ever again after hearing about your efforts to see a few
ETA's !
I really hope you do get to see this very elegant shower properly, and from
Oz as well, Michel.

Kind Regards
Kearn

P.S. I might take this opportunity to add to my report on the ETA's for
2003, if i can.

I said in my post that Venus was a major source of light pollution, but in
fact in hindsight, I'm pretty sure that it was actually a very bright
Zodiacal light that was most affecting the seeing in the east (it started at
around 3:30 am i think? both nights as well) and certainly rivalled the
milky way eventually and rose maybe to near zenith at its point, hard to
distinguish from twilight/Venus by morning though.
I Know this painfully 'cause its badly affected most of our attempted
tracked photos of the radiant and Mars in Cap. that night (we only got one
faint short ETA on film coming from radiant, with a 28mm lens - of course
they were all out of frame as usual ... very camera shy meteors!) Might have
to wait till may 2005 for that shot of the ETA radiant with multiple
meteors!
Also The ZLM i gave were from when we arrived at our site on both nights.
