(meteorobs) June Bootid monitoring tonight

Dear meteor observers,

As has been announced already, the June Bootids have their
time of maximum tonight. The night June 27/28 will be the
relevant night for all geographical longitudes. It should
be noted that the activity is LIKELY TO BE VERY LOW.
Because of a prediction of heightened activity in 2004,
however, we should be alert even in 2003. A reliable
measure of the activity this year will be very helpful
for modelling. A reliable negative result is also valuable.

When you are observing the June Bootids, keep in mind that
they entry velocity in the Earth's atmoshpere is extremely
low - 18 km/s. Meteors will apear slower than most of the
meteors you usually see. If a meteor coming from the radiant
is slow, but not EXCEPTIONALLY SLOW, it is not a June Bootid.

The geocentric June Bootid position is a few degrees north
of the figure of Bootes. Due to the low speed, the meteoroids
are affected by Earth's gravity and enter the atmosphere
at steeper angles. The APPARENT RADIANT is thus shifted
towards Draco, if you observe in the evening. In general,
it is shifted towards the zenith.

Please send your observations as usual to

Clear skies, and looking forward to your results,
