(meteorobs) Observations: July 27-28, 2003

Hi All,

Last night I finally got to observe after a long 'down-time'... I met Bob
Lunsford and we drove up to the Alpine, California rest stop to observe what
we were HOPING was going to be *lots* of meteors. Unfortunately, SoCal is
getting hit with the usual monsoonal flow this time of year and skies were
not as dark as we would have liked them. There was a slight but noticeable
haze much of the night. I got to check out using my new Toyota Paseo
Convertible as a meteor observing 'coffin'. It worked! and it was very
comfortable. This was the first time I observed at this site (the site that
Bob L frequently reports from)... there was too much noise all night from
the mountain highway truck traffic. Probably gonna be the last time I
observe from here.

In Teff=2.45h, I managed to tally 39 meteors (formal report below). No real
highlights other than a slightly fragmenting, orange-ish, 3sec-in-duration,
magnitude 1 SPO. Other than that, most of the activity was faint, fast
(other than ACs) and short. If we favourable conditions, Bob and I will
head out again tonight.

Given that it has been many months since I last observed, it was great
meeting up with Bob and getting out underneath the stars! Hope we have
clear skies tonight!

Cheers,
