LEONID MULTI-INSTRUMENT AIRCRAFT CAMPAIGN

Status of project as of August 16, 2003
=======================================

1. LEONID MAC WORKSHOP (AUG 28-30) AGENDA POSTED

A preliminary agenda has been posted at:
http://leonid.arc.nasadot gov/workshop/agenda.html

If for any reason, your submitted contribution is not listed, or
not correctly, please contact the SOC at: peter@max.arc.nasadot gov
Please use this e-mail address also for other correspondence
related to the workshop.

2. PASJ SPECIAL ISSUE

Dr. Jun-ichi Watanabe informs us that the journal "Publications of
the Astronomical Society of Japan" has issued a special issue on
the 2001 Leonid storm research in Vol. 55 (No. 3). The issue
contains two Letters and six Research Papers, with results on the
fragmentation of meteoroids in the interplanetary medium, on the
clustering of meteoroids in the stream, and on high-precision radiant
structure analysis of the Leonid dust trails. These results were
presented at the 2002 Leonid MAC Workshop.

Also, Shingo Nishiura of Kiso Observatory, Japan, and colleages report
on the magnitude distribution of faint Leonid meteors during the
2001 meteor storm in PASJ Vol. 54, p. L-83-88.

3. WORKSHOP ON COMETARY DUST

Results on Leonid storm research were reported at the Workshop
On Cometary Dust In Astrophysics, which was held August 10-15
at the Crystal Mountain Lodge near Mount Rainier in Washington
State. About 60 researchers discussed NASA's Stardust mission and
its potential science payoff. A key question raised in the meeting
was the possible presence of materials created during comet
collisions and crust formation. If such materials fragment only
in large pieces, then they are not likely observed by STARDUST.
Such mm-cm sized particles can only be studied by meteor shower
observations, pending future landing missions.
