Subject: (meteorobs) Meteor Observation
East GA 11- 29/30 -03
This
morning I took part in a small project that Paul Jones and I whipped up just
after this year's Leonids -- an "experimental" double-station observation with
me at the northern/western end and Paul at the southern/eastern
end, distance (app)196 miles (315 km;170 nautical
miles)as the heron flies between the two sites:
Initial headings: (between
sites)
south-southeast (161.6 degrees)
north-northwest (342.2
degrees)
However,
Paul was to look NNW and I faced SSW, rather than directly along the site
headings. The session ran from 12:26PM to 02:26AM local time.
I started about seven minutes early. My results were not bad at
all...
I was expecting good LM's as I
headed out for my site; sure enough the normally faint Milky Way region near
Orion was tonight a glowing band. Even better, I was able to observe the
rising of Canopus, which culminates at only about 4 degrees or so here.
It was shockingly clear as it slipped up off the horizon sometimes around
01:15 local. My mean LM was an astonishing +6.61, about as high
as I ever get.
There was one 2-minute period
during the first hour when I was unable to keep track of alignments
because another, and yet another, meteor would appear -- 5
meteors logged during 05:49-05:50!! That first hour had 18
meteors, while the second was not quite as strong, with 13. I eventually
logged 31 meteors total, and felt it was a satisfying non-major-shower
session.
Full report below; For the
double-station observation, I noted constellations or directions in the meteor
data on many meteors, in case reference is needed from Paul's data,
which I anxiously await.
