(meteorobs) GEMINIDS nice show from Mojave Desert, CA

I am back in the mainland for the Holidays, and arranged to be driving through the Mojave National Preserve area in southern California on the nearest peak night here I guess was Dec 13/14, saturday evening before the moon rose.

Conditions were quite good, only a few scarce high clouds marred an otherwise perfect sky, lowering the LM slightly. Its really amazing the intense compact light dome from Las Vegas still 100 miles away! But if you put it out of your FOV it doesn't really affect the LM.

Despite the low radiant for the early hour (I began at 7:50pm local time) the Geminids put on a fine show with a nice distribution of meteors of all types. There was a peak in the distribution around mag 3/4 and another smaller peak around -1, so an interesting bi-modal of brightnesses.

(BTW, if anyone knows how to pronounce or what is the origin of the name "Zzyzx" I would be most interested to know!)
