(meteorobs) COMs,...er, URS from East GA 12/21/2003
I made a snap decision last night to take advantage of exceptionally
clear, dry skies to get in early Ursid observations; like Richard I was
concerned about having clear skies Tuesday morning. Despite the 25F
temperature, I felt the prospects
for a two-hour session would be excellent for the pre-dawn hours, thus I
found myself bundled and layered in the bed of the old pickup at 3:30 AM
local time this morning, facing north and looking up at absolutely clear,
+6.7 skies!
Ursids -- hmm... Well, I saw a couple in the final hour, two faint
little luminescent smudges against the charcoal northern sky. But the
NAPX/COMs, they were another story altogether, really threatening to upend
the SPOs for dominance in the rates-race -- all told, 10 NAPX vs. 13 SPOs!
Most of these were seen during a very active (at times) second hour. I had
four multiple-meteor minutes, two which had three per minute. During one
astonishing moment three meteors, 2 SAPX & one SPO, appeared within 3
seconds of each other! Then again, there were a couple of rather long
lulls. A frost magnet, I eventually found myself quite happy with the
33-meteor two-hour total...surely it could have been much URS.
