(meteorobs) Re: Quadrantids 2004 SW Florida not bad

A mostly clear night for Quadrantids 2004 brought a reasonable show.
Temperature about 60F, just a little warmer than Kim in Georgia, so a large
area of conditions quite comfortable. I made it wearing just a teeshirt
plus one cover sheet but was getting a bit chilled by the end. The car
heater felt good for the ride home. In stark contrast with the frosty
conditions 3 years ago.

The first period with setting moon had a short spell with thin clouds that
mostly materialized overhead, then moved westward. I set the transition
period to dark sky by itself to have a uniform final period with best
conditions. The clouds shaded the city down to levels I haven't seen for a
while here. Zodiacal light became very prominent. Clouds again moved in
and cut the period short by perhaps 20 minutes. I was lucky for a change
with a full hour clear at the right time.

The brightest Quadrantid came at 522 EST (1022 UT), a pastel green-blue
-3m with train 1 second. The best sporadic was a +2 earthgrazer from
somewhere around Sirius low in the WSW, meteor seen south to SE going 50
degrees in 6 full seconds. Its brightness sputtered part of the way but
never got better than +2.

I was facing east at elevation 70 degrees the full session.
