(meteorobs) Meteorite falls(?) in Peru - 31 Jan 2004, 02 Feb 2004

However, here on 'meteorobs' they are much less off-topic. :)
Has anyone heard any more news of either of these events? It
seems the description of the fall site on 31 Jan sounds just
a bit suspect. And the second report may just be the result
of news media overexposure from the first: but then again,
the report of a daytime fireball on 02 Feb is interesting.

Yesterday there were news of the fall of meteorites in two places at the
south of Perú. One of the supposed meteorites fell on saturday Jan.31st
on Chillapuquio, some 20 km near Cuzco and produced a hole around 20 m
diameter and 30 m deep. The images in TV yesterday show a round hole
with fractured edges but there were no signs of ejecta nor burned grass
around the hole which makes me think on a geological fault event (there
are no reports of people that has seen the fireball). The second
supposed meteorite fell monday Feb.02nd on Aplao, a city some 160 km NW
of Arequipa and some 300 km SW from the first event (I enclose a
location map). This second event ocurred in an inaccesible area so
people has not reach the place. People of the area had seen a bright
fireball falling around midday and seismographs registered a quake of
3.5 Mercalli.

Ayer huboi noticias sobre la caída de dos meteoritos en el sur del Perú.
Uno de los supuestos meteoritos cayó el sábado 31 en Chillapuquio, a
unos 20 km del Cuzco, y produjo un agujero de unos 20 m de diámetro y
unos 30 m. de profundidad. Las imágenes en TV muestran un agujero
circular con bordes fracturados pero no muestran sugnos del material
eyectado ni señales de pasto chamuscado en los alrededores del cráter
por lo que sospecho que podría deberse a una falla geológica más que a
un meteorito (no se reporta haber visto el bólido). El segundo supuesto
meteorito cayó en Aplao, a 160 km a NO de Arequipa y a unos 300 km al SO
del primer evento (se incluye mapa del área). Este segundo evento
ocurrió en un área inaccesible de modo que la gente aún no ha podido
llegar al lugar. La gente reporta haber visto el bólido y sintió un
temblor que fue registrado en los sismógrafos con intensidad de 3.5 en
la Escala de Mercalli.
En cuanto tenga más información se las haré llegar.
