Re: (meteorobs) '98 Leonid rates

When I think of the past few years' Leonids, I too fondly recall the '98
Shower/Storm. Here in western Turkey, it was the most incredible thing I've
ever seen...the following years' appearances were nothing compared to '98.

i was watching about 1/3 of the night sky and i was able to only count about
25 meteors / minute. but i KNEW i was missing at least another 50% in other
parts of the sky

...at the time i was very new to meteor watching so i didn't even know what
a 'fireballs'was!!...too bad because what i thought was an approaching
thunder storm, was probably fireballs...the whole ground lite up just like
lightening...i could even see my shadow on the ground...but i didn't turn
toward the north (behind me) to look because there was a mountain/high hill
there and i kept my eyes turned seaward...

sorry i missed the fireballs...there must have been at least 4 or 5 between
the hours of 11pm and 3am (local time) as i was observing. i believe i was
observing 'earthgrazers' for the first hour or two...and long-lasting
trains...some even disturbed by high winds...truly an amazing and the most
'humbling' experience of my entire life!!!
