Re: (meteorobs) Dr. Mattei

Good-bye Janet...

I agree with Michael Linnolt's eulogy on the late irreplaceable icon,
Janet A. Mattei. Although I am not rearly as active a variable star observer
as Mike and some others in this group, I too have fond memories of her and
her unselfish generosity and enthusiasm. I remember seeing her at meetings
with her husband Mike at Goddard Space Flight Center, the AAS, and Stellafane.
She moved in and out of both amateur and professional circles with ease and
grace. A few years back, when I last saw her at Stellafane, when talking to
her, feeling a little guilty, I mentioned that I should do more variable star
observing. She responded by saying that I was doing valuable work as a GSFC.
Despite the fact that I was a mere technician. This is an example of how she
always was trying to make you feel wanted and respected, and thus a better
person. When the late great American amateur astronomer Leslie C. Peltier died
in May 1980, Janet wrote in his eulogy: "Leslie will be remembered forever in
the hearts of all lovers of the stars". To this I say, Janet Akyuz Mattei will
also always be remembered in the hearts of all lovers of the stars. The world
is a better place because she lived, and we were all lucky to have her around.

Sincerely,
