(IAAC) Care and Feeding of the NetAstroCatalog list

THE CARE AND FEEDING OF THE "netastrocatalog" EMAIL LIST

TABLE OF CONTENTS:
I. UNSUBSCRIBING
II. RESUBSCRIBING
III. POSTING *OBSERVATIONS*
IV. POSTING ANY OTHER MESSAGE
V. ACCESSING OTHER INFORMATION
VI. CONTACTING THE ADMINISTRATOR
---------------------------------

I. First off, TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS LIST:
	1) Send an email to the address:
	        majordomo@latrade.com
FROM THE ACCOUNT WHICH IS SUBSCRIBED. In this email, you may
put any "Subject:" line you wish - it doesn't matter.
	2) In the BODY of your email, put the following lines:
	        unsubscribe netastrocatalog
	        end
	3) DON'T SEND UNSUBSCRIBES TO "netastrocatalog@latrade.com"!

II. If later on you then wish to RESUBSCRIBE TO THIS LIST:
	1) Send an email to:
	          majordomo@latrade.com
FROM THE EMAIL ACCOUNT WHICH YOU WISH TO BE SUBSCRIBED! In
this email, put any "Subject:" line you want - it's ignored.
	2) In the BODY of your email, put the following lines ON TOP:
	        subscribe netastrocatalog
	        end
	3) DON'T SEND SUBSCRIPTIONS TO "netastrocatalog@latrade.com"!

III. If you wish to post an ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATION for other subscribers to see (and which will then be posted on our Web archive), send an email to:
	netastrocatalog@latrade.com

Be sure to put descriptive text in your Subject line for BOTH the object you're logging, and the INSTRUMENT you observed with. For example:
	To: netastrocatalog@latrade.com
	From: me@my.domain.com
	Subject: Obj: M31 Inst: 8" f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain

In the body of your email, please include AT LEAST your name, your level of observing experience, WHERE you observed from (was it in the middle of a city or way out in the pitch-black country?), and OF COURSE - WHAT YOU SAW! :>

For a sample observation, try the Web archive (see section V below).

IV. If you wish to send ANYTHING OTHER THAN ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATIONS, please do NOT send them to the "netastrocatalog" address! Instead, post your email to the specially set-up "announcements" list at:
	netastrocatalog-announce@latrade.com

Everyone who is subscribed to 'netastrocatalog' is also subscribed to the 'netastrocatalog-announce' list! Whether your message is a question on how to use this list, or on how best to observe a particular object, or if you have some announcement to share with your fellow astronomers - ANYTHING - just send it to the *announce* list, and everyone on netastrocatalog will get it.

V. ACCESSING OTHER INFORMATION. First off, try the dedicated Web site at:
	http://www.tiac.net/users/lewkaren/netastrocatalog
This Web site includes a sample format for posting your observations to the list, as well as a pointer to our WEB ARCHIVE OF OBSERVATIONS: look over all the observations posted over the last YEAR... A search engine is coming soon.

After that, there are a number of sites on the Web where you can get more information on amateur astronomy, and deep-sky observing in particular.
Webb Society (international organization of deep-sky amateurs):
		http://www.webbsociety.org/
Mark & Carol's Deep-Sky Home Page (great intro material!):
		http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Corridor/2120/
SEDS "Messier Database" (the Messiers are a good start):
		http://www.seds.org/messier/
Amateur Astronomers' Observing Log (both planetary & deep-sky):
		http://www.lies.com/aaol/
RASC "Deep-Sky Challenge" list (these are real toughies):
		http://worldgate.com/~rasc/deepsky.html

Finally, if you've read all the Web sites and info files, and you STILL have some questions, try posting them to "netastrocatalog-announce@latrade.com"!

VI. Last, any questions on HOW the 'netastrocatalog' list(s) work can be emailed to me, the list administrator, at the address:
	owner-netastrocatalog@latrade.com

Clear skies!
