I know others on the list will have favorites which they'll tell you about. 
Check out the Webb Society handbooks, Jonathan: you can get the whole set of 8 
volumes USED usually for around the same price as Burnhams. If you want to get 
a bit more serious later - and spend another $50 or so - I also VERY highly 
recommend the book by Luginbuhl and Skiff, called _ Observing Handbook and 
Catalog of Deep Sky Objects_ (I think - I always forget the exact title.)
