(IAAC) supernova in M88

Dear members,
I don't have much knowledge on supernova observation and I have a couple of 
questions.
I heard that a supernova can be as bright as a galaxy but the supernova in 
M88 is said to be about magnitude 14 but M88 is much brighter. Will it be 
brighter than the current brightness? How long does a supernova remain 
bright? I mean until when the supernova in M88 is observable for amateurs?
