(IAAC) Yet ANOTHER bright(?) supernova [SN 1999cp]




This one is on the far side of NGC 5468, in Western Virgo. Should
still be available to observers after evening twilight for another
few weeks... Sneak a peak once the moon is out of the way!

Dear SN watchers,

  IAUC 7205 tells the discovery of two supernovae by LOSS KAIT team.
Among them, SN 1999cp is nearby one which can reach 14 mag or so.

  SN 1999cp was found on June 18.2 UT (18.2 mag) and confirmed on 19.2
UT (17.2 mag).  The location is: R.A. = 14h06m31s.3, Decl. = -5o26'49"
(2000.0), which is about 52" west and 23" north from the core of the
face-on Scd galaxy NGC 5468.  This location is well far side of the
arm.  Note that there are some confusing foreground stars on the disk
of the host galaxy; the observer should check the discovery image at
http://astro.barkeley.edu/~bait/1999/sn99cp.html .

  CfA term have gotten a spectrum of SN 1999cp on June 19.2 UT (IAUC
7206), which shows that this is of type Ia in quite early phase.  Also
the recession velocity of the host is reported as about 2870 km/s.  As
SNmax calculates [vsnet-chat 2003], it can reach around 14 mag if
it is somewhat bright SNeIa without absorption.  Followup photometry
is, just as Dr. Filippenko told on IAUC 7206, strongly encouraged.
