Below are observations of the four best Shakhbazians I've viewed.  Another
one to take a look at is Shkh 26 = Abell 1143. If these prove easy for the
large aperture crowd, take a look at Shkh 49, located just 20' NW of the
N3158 cluster!  By the way, Shkh 16 and Shkh 166 form remarkable galaxy

17.5": this member of Shkh 202 is typical of the four compact members viewed
- very faint and small, round, ~15" diameter.  Located 5' S of a mag 6.7 star
and 3' SE of a mag 10.5 star.  A second mag 10 star is 6' W.  In a tight trio
with Z158-075 2.2' N and Z158-078 3.7' E.  Although very small, the members
have a reasonably high surface brightness and was able to observe at 380x
which also helped to move the bright star out of the field.

17.5": this is last of four members of Shkh 202 viewed on 4/9/99 (excluding
IC 727 in the field), a faint group of very small galaxies about 15' N of 9
Comae.  Appeared extremely faint and small, 10"-15" in size and located 3.7'
due E of Z158-074.

17.5": very faint, extremely small, round, 10-15" diameter. This member of
Shkh 202 is situated just 2.5' S of a mag 6.7 star and 1.4' following a mag
10 star!  CGCG 158-74 is just 2.2' S and CGCG 158-78 is 4.5' SE.

17.5": this difficult member of Shkh 202 is situated just 2.8' ESE of mag 6.7
SAO 82246 which makes the observation quite a challenge.  Appeared virtually
steallar, perhaps 5" in diameter.  Not seen last month (4/9/99) in
observation of the group from Digger Pines.

17.5": this was the most difficult of six members of Shkh 202 viewed.  Only
glimpsed for moments perhaps 15% of the time.  Seemed barely non-stellar, ~5"
in size.  Sandwiched between CGCG 158-075 = Shkh 16-3 just 1.0' N and CGCG
158-074 = Shkh 16-1 1.3' SE.  Not seen last month (4/9/99) from Digger Pines.

17.5": extremely faint, very small, round, 15" diameter.  Located 3.2' NW of
mag 6.7 SAO 82246 which detracts from viewing.  This galaxy is the
northernmost of 4 members of Shkh 202 viewed.  Observed at 380x in very good
seeing.

17.5" (5/15/99): picked up immediately at 280x just 2.0' SW of a 9th
magnitude star.  This is the only member of Shkh 16 which is not difficult
and was visible continuously as an 0.3' round knot.  Four galaxies were
observed with patience and concentation within a 3.5' chain!

17.5" (4/15/99): this galaxy is the brightest in Shkh 16 = Arp 330 which
consists of five galaxies in a 3.5' chain oriented N-S.  Appeared very faint,
extremely small, round, 15" diameter.  Visible continuously with averted
vision.  The view is severely hampered by 9th magnitude SAO 30113 which is
situated just 2.0' NE!  The other members were extremely challenging with
Shkh 16-2 = M+09-27-092 located 1.7' S at the south end of the chain.

17.5" (5/15/99): furthest south in the Shkh 16 chain.  On first glance at
280x this galaxy and Shkh 16-1 were the only two that were immediately picked
up.  Once the position was pinpointed, I could almost hold this object
continuously with averted vision.  Appeared extremely small, but definitely
nonstellar, ~10" in size.

17.5" (4/15/99): this galaxy is the second brightest in the Shkh 16 chain but
still was quite challenging.  It appeared as an extremely faint, round knot,
at most 10" in diameter.  Could not hold steadily but visible ~2/3 of time
with averted vision.  Located at the south end of the chain, 1.7' S of Shkh
16-1 and 3.5' SW of a mag 9 star which really detracts from observing these
nearly stellar galaxies.

17.5" (5/15/99): this difficult member of Shkh 16 popped into view for
moments several times and that's about it!  No details and seemed
quasi-stellar.  Bracketed by brighter Shkh 16-1 and Shkh 16-2 just 1' N and
1' SW.

17.5" (4/15/99): this marginal galaxy in Shkh 16 was only glimpsed for
moments at 280x and 380x and very difficult to confirm.  Sandwiched between
Shkh 16-1 just 0.9' N and Shkh 16-2 just 1.0' SW.

17.5" (4/15/99): another marginal galaxy in Shkh 16 is the further north in
the chain and was possibly glimpsed a few times at 280x and 380x just 1.1' NW
of mag 9 SAO 30113.

17.5" (5/15/99): one of the two fainter members of Shkh 16 which were
glimpsed.  I'm certain of the sighting as it was detected several times
although the image was stellar and fleeting.  Interestingly, I didn't see
nearby Shkh 16-4 which I thought was marginally detected last month although
this galaxy wasn't noted!

M+14-08-017 = (U10638) = Z367-021 = NPM1G +81.0092 = Shkh 166-1

17.5" (7/9/99): brightest (barely) in Shkh 166.  Situated less than 1'
following a mag 13 star and collinear with NPM1G +81.0091 = Shkh 166-4 just
1.5' WSW and M+14-08-018 = Shkh 166-7 just 1.4' NE.  Appeared faint, round,
~20", very weak concentration.

17.5" (7/20/98): brightest in the UGC 10638 chain (UGC notes 11 members - I
viewed five of these) located 30' SE of mag 4.2 Epsilon UMi.  Like all
members, this object appeared as a featureless round spot ~20" diameter (a
bit larger than the other members) situated 50" E of a mag 13 star.  NED
lists this compact group as part of Abell 2247.

17.5" (7/9/99): very faint and small, round, 15"-20" diameter.  Requires
averted for best view.  Located less than 2' NW of a mag 12.5 star.

17.5" (7/20/98): first in the Shakhbazian 166 galaxy group with five members
observed in a 6.7' chain oriented SW-NE!!  This object was typical of the
members of the group (3rd brightest) - extremely faint, round, 15"-20"
diameter.  Located 1.6' NW of a mag 12 star.  This object is actually a
triple system although the faint companions to the NE and S were not visible.

17.5" (7/9/99): very faint, round, ~20" diameter.  This is probably the
second easiest member of Shkh 166.

17.5" (7/20/98): second of five in the UGC 10638 chain (Shkh 166) and very
similar to M+14-08-015 located 2' SW.  Appears as an extremely faint round
"knot" perhaps 15" in diameter.

17.5" (7/9/99): very faint, round, ~15" diameter.  Situated just 0.7' SW of a
mag 13 star and 1.5' WSW of Shkh 166-1.  Easily visible with averted but
cannot hold steadily.

17.5" (7/20/98): third of five in a compact galaxy chain (Shkh 166).  This
extremely compact object appeared as a 10" knot just 40" SW of a mag 13 star
and was the fourth brightest in the group.

17.5" (7/9/99): this member of Shkh 166 is situated 1.4' NE of M+14-08-017 =
Shkh 166-1.  Appears extremely faint, very small, requires averted to
comfortably view.  In moments of steady seeing the galaxy is clearly
elongated 2:1 ~N-S with dimensions ~20"x10".

17.5" (7/20/98): last and furthest NE in a linear chain of five galaxies with
a 7' total length.  I recorded this object as the faintest in the group
appearing as a 15" round spot with averted vision.  Located 1.4' NE of
M+14-08-017 (brightest in group).

17.5": this threshold galaxy is located close south of the Shkh 166 (U10638)
chain in the same field of view.  With averted and concentration appears for
moments as a 10" knot 45" SW of a mag 13 star and 1.5' NW of a wide mag 12/13
pair.  The detection was repeated several times.  Member of Abell 2247.

V = 12.9;  Size 1.7x1.1;  SB = 13.5;  PA = 35d

17.5" (9/3/94): brightest of four IC galaxies in HCG 97 = Shakh 30.  Faint,
small, elongated 3:2 NW-SE, 0.7'x0.4', gradually brightens to a small bright
core and an almost stellar nucleus.  A mag 11 star (with IC 5351 attached) is
2' SW.  IC 5351 lies 1.3' SW, IC 5356 3.0' S and IC 5359 3.8' ESE. IC 5352 =
HCG 97E not seen.

17.5" (10/21/95): faint, fairly small, elongated 4:3 NNW-SSE.

17.5" (9/3/94): this is the third brightest galaxy in HCG 97 group.
Extremely faint, extremely small, round, 10" diameter.  Attached at the N
side of a mag 11 star which makes viewing very difficult.  Located 1.3' SW of
IC 5357.  IC 5356 lies 2.5' SE and IC 5359 is 4.7' E.

17.5" (10/21/95): extremely faint, extremely small, round.  Attached at the N
side of a mag 12 star which detracts from viewing.

V = 14.0

17.5" (9/3/94): second brightest galaxy in HCG 97 group.  Very faint, very
small, slightly elongated (although difficult to pin down direction), very
weak concentration.  Located between two mag 14 stars off the SW and NE ends
and 3.0' due S of IC 5357.  Forms the southern vertex of an isosceles
triangle with a mag 11 star 2.5' NW and a mag 10 star 2.6' NE.  IC 5351 lies
2.5' NW and IC 5359 is 4.0' NE.

17.5" (10/21/95): very faint, small, round.  A mag 14.5 star is 45" SSW.

V = 14.7;  Size 1.1x0.2;  SB = 12.8

17.5": faintest of four galaxies in HCG 97 compact group.  Extremely faint,
small, very elongated 4:1 NW-SE.  Only visible with averted vision and cannot
be held steadily.  Located 1.6' ENE of a mag 10 star which also detracts from
viewing.  Last in group with IC 5351 4.7' W, IC 5357 3.8' WNW and IC 5356 4'
SW.
