Re: (IAAC) Obj: IC 1296 - Inst: 200mm Newt F5
You are right there Steve, but it was worth
a look and a mention because of the S&T article, strange thing with photo's
and galaxies, the galaxy in this instance has a nucleus that appears about the
same brightness as a nearby star maybe a little fainter, so the tendancy is to
think that it may just be visible, I wonder if the fact that the nucleus is so
much brighter than the star though further away causes this effect on film. I
have in the past managed to nail some pretty faint Galaxies, but I think that so
far the faintest has been mag 14.7 with a SB of 15, I dont have a SB for
IC1296 but I would imagine it to be over 15 which does really put it out of my
grasp with an 8 inch!!

This object would be pretty hard to find. It is a
galaxy of 15th magnitude,
and not being a point source, is dimmer than a 15th
magnitude star.

Class: SBbc
Constellation: Lyr
Data: mag 15.3 size 1.1 x

Position: RA 18:53 DEC +33:04
Description:
This is a Negative
report, bit strange of course, but this object is of special
interest as it
appears in this Months Sky and Telescope in an article about
pushing your
scope to the limits, basically it's a chart of the area around M57
with stars
to mag 19 listed, and IC 1296 is right there with them! So seeing
this I just
had to have a go for it, I tried for nearly 45 minutes but without
success, I
guess a better sky might have shown a tiny something, I saw stars
down to
14.1 but this little beaut eluded me! Pity because it does look very
nice in
the photo.
