Hello,

following this interesting discussion, I have looked up the numbers in
the NGC, and it seems to me that they result from independent
discoveries of various parts of the nebula by different observers - with
their long-focus instruments of last century. I added some of this info
to http://www.seds.org/messier/xtra/ngc/n2244.html .
