For those interested in this semi-recent and slightly (but perhaps not) OT
thread, I've found Bessel's report in the Astronomisches Jahrbuch for 1812
(published 1809), p. 126-128. I'll put a summary online soon, linked from

In short: Bessel saw a nebulous object once [Nov 9, 1808] or perhaps twice
or three times [Nov 7 or Nov 11] which couldn't be found later any more.
