Description: Despite its identification as a globular cluster and its
appearance in photographs,in the telescope M71 looks just like a compact
open cluster similar to the Wild Duck, M11, in Scutum. There is a mass of
small stars scattered over the obvious part of the cluster with a few
brighter stars including a reddish star. The obvious cluster is surrounded
by a broader diffuse unresolved halo, which possibly corresponds with the
halo of fainter stars surrounding the cluster in photographs.
This pleasant and interesting object is easy to find. It lies halfway along
and just below the line connecting the bright tip of the arrow, gamma
Sagitta to the middle star delta.
