Data: mag 10.4 size 4'x3'
Position: RA 12:40 DEC +10:11
Description:
Continuing my whirlwind barnyard tour of the Virgo Cluster,
I swept slightly less than one 55' field of view further W
of n4608 (see previous log). There I could readily see a
somewhat less distinguished blur than '08. NGC4596 has a
brighter core than '08, of relatively uniform brightness
with no stellar core. Its halo however was much fainter in
this sky, what some would call an "averted-vision special".
The core was basically round, but showed complex mottling
in averted vision, stretching a just-visible pseudopod of
light out to the S, and revealing occasional hints of dark
structure to concentrated averted vision in the N. Size of
the core was 3' overall, with the halo adding negligibly.
