Description:
The last galaxy in the "trio of fainties" in my Virgo Cluster
Barnstorm this night (see preceding logs for i3647 and i3638)
was tough, but eventually showed some detail. I began from '38
by first swinging back to 27 Vir. From there, I continued on E
another 20', to a mag. 10 star in a near-empty high-power field
(210x, 23'). Concentrating on the area about 5' N of this star,
i3686 became visible to averted vision after a brief pause. It
seemed elongated SE-NW as far as I could tell, and had a barely
perceived brighter concentration near the center. This possible
core was almost symmetrical in the elongated halo of '86, but I
got the impression that it was not quite in the center: viewing
the Sky Survey image of this area later, I confirmed that i3686
is in fact an irregular little spindle, with an off-axis core!
