Description:
After a lovely observation of the OTHER bright Gemini
planetary (see previous log for NGC 2392), I dedicated
a frustrated quarter hour to looking for (what should
be) brightish little n2371. Despite repeated star-hops
to the location, using both 80x and 170x with averted
vision, UHC "blinking" (moving the filter in and out
of my light path), and even scope jiggling, I failed to
pick '71 out from the star field. This 8" try confirms
an earlier observation I made of '71 at this site with
a much larger scope (ATMs 17"), as "nearly stellar". On
the other hand, from a darker site with a 20", I logged
even a bit of detail in this rather large object! Just
another illustration of contrast's strange effects. :)
