Constellation: Ori
Data: mag size
Position: RA 05:35.3 DEC -05:23
Description:
During an abortive attempt to see if I could spot the Horsehead on a
hazy night, I looked at M42. I was surprised to find that the H-beta
filter made the western arc of M42 stand out strong and long, heading
NW, abruptly turning SSW (with a fainter fan continuing NW), and then
curving south and fading out. Only the NW fan was easily visible
without the filter. In contrast, the eastern arcs of M42 (especially
the long one just inside the outermost short one) looked better
without the filter. Note that Orion was still in the upper reaches of
the glow from Schenectady.
