Description:
M8, or the Lagoon Nebula, was the second of the suggested M objects that I
observed on Wednesday morning. This very large and bright emission nebula also
contains the young open cluster NGC 6530 and the dark nebulae B88, B89, and B296.
M8 spans about 100 light years and is some 4900 light years distant.
M8's nebulosity was barely visible without the O-III filter. With the filter in
place nebulosity was clearly evident, the so-called Hourglass was very distinct,
and the major dark lane was quite noticeable.
