Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 4
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 17.5" F/4.5
Magnification: 145x
Filters used: no
Object: IC 349 (=vdB 22)
Category: reflection nebula
Constellation: TAU
Object data: 30'x30' / South of Merope (23 Tau).
RA/DE:03h46.3m, +23°56' (2000); Uranometria 132
Description: large nebula pear shaped, about 18'x11' in N-S axis; verz
fuzzy edges, hard to fix a limit; very faint, Merope of mag.6 is quite
blue; UHC can be of some help by fighting the light pollution (an outdoor
light in my case); maybe a small enhancement of brightness in a 10'x5' area
displaced to the east on the overall; the eastern border is "sharper" than
the other edges; seen at 45x with UHC, not without; seen at 87x without
filter; well seen at 125 and 145x..

I can provide a scanned drawing of IC 349 to anyone who can read the binhex
encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works sometimes with other
configurations...
