(IAAC) IC 466 - 17.5inch F/4.5

Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Date and UT of observation: 04 February 1997, about 22h30 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.31
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 3
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 17.5" F/4.5
Magnification: 211x
=46ilters used: UHC, OIII, Hbeta
Object: IC 466 (Sh2-288)
Category: Diffuse Nebula (reflection and emission)
Constellation: MON
Object data: diam.1.0';
RA/DE: 07h08.7m, -04=B018' (2000; corrected with Guide); Uranometria 228
Description: at 211x and UHC, small nebula, round and faint, diameter
estimated about 1.3'; homogeneous and then gradually fainter with nebulous
edges (UHC) and ill-defined without filter (that means that a filter
defines better the limits of the nebula); UHC, OIII and Hbeta are not
giving an enhanced contrast (except for the effect above) and neither a
W38A (blue) filter; a central star of mag12 is visible with 3 other stars
of mag14 along NNW, W and S borders.

I can provide a scanned drawing of IC 466 to anyone who can read the binhex
encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works sometimes with other
configurations...
