Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.3

Instrument: Coulter 17.5" F/4.5
Magnification: 174x
=46ilters used: UHC, OIII
Object: Sh2-71 (PK 36-1 1; PN G035.9-01.1)
Category: Planetary Nebula
Constellation: AQL
Object data: Vmag=3D13.2; dim.200x110"; type IIIb+III; central * of
Vmag=3D13.8; discovered by Sharpless in 1959.
RA/DE: 19h02.0m, +02=B009' (2000); Uranometria 251

Description: at 174x, medium to large PN, quite faint, oval with
ill-defined and irregular edges; darker center (patchy) surrounded by an
irregularly brighter ring on an external fainter cloud (but brighter than
the dark center; central star of mag13 with a faint companion of mag15 12"
to NNW (PA335d); estimated to be 150"x110" in a NW-SE axis (PA140/320d); a
polarized filter was tried but showed nothing; UHC gave a good contrast
gain and OIII a very good one; the nebula was visible at 45x when already
found at a superior power, and still visible at 312x without filter.

I can provide a scanned drawing of Sh2-71 to anyone who can read the binhex
encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works sometimes with other
configurations...
