Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Date and UT of observation: 03 July 1995, about 01h30 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.2
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 2 (based on naked eye scintillation)
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 17.5" F/4.5
Magnification: 145x
=46ilters used: UHC, OIII
Object: Abell 70 (PK 38-25 1; PN G038.1-25.4)
Category: Planetary Nebula
Constellation: AQL
Object data: Vmag=3D14.5; dim.48"x39"; type IV; central * of Vmag=3D18.4;
discovered by Abell in 1955. This nebula seems on deep plates to be crossed
by an edge-on galaxy on the N part of ots ring (visible on DSS for example).
RA/DE: 20h31.6m, -07=B006' (2000); Uranometria 298

Description: at 145x, medium in size and very faint PN, round with
ill-defined edges, homogeneous, estimated to be 45" in diam.; OIII has a
good contrast gain and UHC a small one; nebula visible at 87x without
filter (even at 74x when already found at 87 or 145x); visible at 74x with
UHC and even at 45x with OIII.

I can provide a scanned drawing of Abell 70 to anyone who can read the
binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works sometimes with other
configurations...
