(IAAC) Egg Nebula (PK 080-06 1) - 17.5inch F/4.5

Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Date and UT of observation: 31 July 1997, about 02h00 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.4
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1.5
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 2 (stellar stars until 211x)
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 17.5"/445mm F/4.5
Magnification: 400x
=46ilters used: UHC, OIII, Hbeta, Wratten 47B, polarizer
Object: Egg Nebula (PK 080-06 1)
Category: Proto-Planetary Nebula (ie PN acting spectroscopically as a
reflection nebula)
Constellation: CYG
Object data: Vmag=8912; dim.19"x7"; central * CRL 2688 (V1610 Cyg,
Bmag=3D5.8-6.3?) of Vmag=3D12.25;
RA/DE: 21h02.30m, +36=B042.0' (2000); Uranometria 121, Sky Atlas 9

Description: very small nebula, cometary shaped, medium to bright with
ill-defined edges; double lobes, about 19"x7" (estimated on the drawing
after precise scale determination) in a N-S axis; the S lobe is smaller,
round about 5" in diameter; the N lobe is larger, elongated, about 12"x7"
with a "coma" extending toward the N; a mag15 star is at 25" WSW from the S
lobe; a polarizing filter extinguishes the S lobe when its vector is aimed
at about PA 112=B0 (if someone has a confirmation of this measurement, I
would be glad to know about it); must be made of dust as UHC, OIII and
Hbeta are ineffective. The Wratten 47B (blue filter) seems to be of some
help (a little).

I can provide a scanned drawing of Egg Nebula to anyone who can read the
binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works sometimes with other
configurations...
