(IAAC) Sh 1-89 (PK 89-0 1; PN G089.8-00.6) - 17.5" F/4.5

Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Date and UT of observation: 03 August 1997, about 02h50 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.4
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 2 (stellar stars until 200x)
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 17.5" (445mm) F/4.5
Magnification: 400x
=46ilters used: OIII, UHC, Hbeta
Object: Sh 1-89 (PK 89-0 1; PN G089.8-00.6)
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: CYG
Object data: Vmag=3D14.8; dim.>35" (162x70 according to IDB); central star o=
f
Vmag=3D19.1; discovered by Sharpless in 1959; ELCAT: OIII [496+501nm] =3D 9 =
x
Hbeta [486nm]
RA/DE: 21h14.0m, +47=B045' (2000); Uranometria 85;

Description: at 400x + OIII, medium sized PN, extremely faint; homogeneous
with ill-defined edges; round and about 48" in diam.; never seen without
filter; UHC has a slight contrast gain and OIII a good one; a mag14 star
stand against the SE border and another of mag11 is 2.5' from the ENE
limits of the nebula.

Note: CCD images are worth trying on this one because Halpha line is 1.5
stronger than OIII lines (in fact the nebula looks great on DSS images as
they were taken with a red sensible combination on the Palomar Schmidt in
the 50s).

I can provide a scanned drawing of Sh 1-89 to anyone who can read the
binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works sometimes with other
configurations...
