Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.3 with indirect vision in UMi 10% of
the time
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 3
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 17.5" (445mm) F/4.5
Magnification: 211x
=46ilters used: OIII, UHC
Object: Jones 1 (PK 104-29.1; PK 104-29 1; PN G104.2-29.6)
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: PEG
Object data: Vmag=3D12.1; Bmag=3D15.1; dim.332"x332" (470"x415" according to
IDB); type IIIb; central star PG 1159 of V=3D16.1; discovered by Jones in
1941; ELCAT: OIII [496+501nm]=3D 18 x Hbeta [486nm]
RA/DE: 23h35.9m, +30=B028' (2000); Uranometria 89/124;

Description: at 211x and OIII, large PN with two lobes because partly
annular, very faint without filter, faint with filter; edges quite sharp
and total diameter estimated about 6.3'; the ring goes from the NE (PA45d)
to the SE (PA130d): from PA45d to 300d stands a brighter area from 50" to
95" wide respectively, from PA300d to 250d, the ring disappears to be seen
again from PA250d to 130d with a constant 70" width; a mag14.5 star is near
center; UHC has a good response and OIII a very good one; the PN is
discernible at 45x without filter.

I can provide a scanned drawing of Jones 1 to anyone who can read the
binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works sometimes with other
configurations...
