(IAAC) M 1-8 (PK 210+01.1; PN G210.3+01.9) - 17.5" F/4.5

Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Date and UT of observation: 30 December 1997, about 01h30 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.31 with averted vision 25% of the time
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 3 (stellar stars until 160x)
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 17.5" (445mm) F/4.5
Magnification: 211x
Filters used: OIII, UHC, Hbeta
Object: M 1-8 (PK 210+01.1; PN G210.3+01.9) - 17.5" F/4.5
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: MON
Object data: Vmag=14.2/14.5; dim.19"x19" (36.4"x12.6" in IDB); central star
of Vmag=?; discovered by Minkowski in 1946.
RA/DE: 06h53.5m, +03°12' (2000) - check the further note; (Uranometria 228)

Description: at 211x and OIII filter, small to medium sized PN, quite
faint, round and homogeneous with sharp edges; estimated on drawing to be
about 23" in diameter; The UHC has a good contrast gain, the OIII has a
very good one and Hbeta is of no use; a mag11 star is 1.5' to the E.

Important Note: the coordinates given above are quite wrong (found in Hynes
book; thanks to my drawing and Guide 7, I have found that M1-8 rather
stands at the following position: 06h53m33s, +03°08'07".

I can provide a scanned drawing of M 1-8 to anyone who can read the binhex
encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works sometimes with other
configurations...
