(IAAC) IC 2149 - 8" F/10

Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Object: IC 2149 (PK 166+10.1; PN G166.1+10.4; ARO 23)
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: AUR
Object data: Vmag=10.7; Bmag=11.2; 15"x10"; type IIIb+II; central star of
Vmag=10.2; discovered by Fleming in 1906; ELCAT: [OIII, 496+501nm] = 8 x
[Hbeta, 486nm].
RA/DE: 05h56.39m, +46°06.2' (2000)
Date and UT of observation: 25 December 1992, late evening
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 5.6 with averted vision
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 2
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 3
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Meade SCT 8" (203mm), F/10
Magnification: 80-145x
Filters used: OIII, prism

Description: located at 87x as a fuzzy star around mag10.5-11.0; quite
evident OIII emssion with the prism (verified with the filter) although it
displays the continuous spectrum of the central star; at 145x, the central
star is visible and its nebula enveloppe well seen, particularly with the
OIII filter that provides a very good contrast gain: still small PN; at
312x and OIII, the nebula is oval-shaped .

I can provide a scanned drawing of IC 2149 to anyone who can read the
binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works quite often with other
configurations...
